I have endured so much harassment in my 15 years of being a lesbian. I started realizing that I had feelings for girls at a young age, and I am about to turn 16 soon and I am hoping things will change around for me.
It will change, but one thing that is important is to be true to who you are. Kids your age will find anything to tease and harrass each other about. Keep your head up, be who you are and don't ever let anyone knock you down for that. This is your life and not theirs.
Things will change, we've all been there to some degree, and have worked through it. I think it's important to be who you are, and stay true to that. However, I think it's important to be aware of your surroundings, because unfortunatly we live in a world with ignorant people.
Homosexuality has at times been used as a scapegoat by governments facing problems. For example, during the early 14th century, accusations of homosexual behavior were instrumental in disbanding the Knights Templar under Philip IV of France, who profited greatly from confiscating the Templars' wealth. In the 20th century, Nazi Germany's persecution of homosexual people was based on the proposition that they posed a threat to "normal" masculinity as well as a risk of contamination to the "Aryan race".
In the 1950s, at the height of the Red Scare in the United States, hundreds of federal and state employees were fired because of their homosexuality in the so-called Lavender Scare. (Ironically, politicians opposed to the scare tactics of McCarthyism tried to discredit Senator Joseph McCarthy by hinting during a televised Congressional committee meeting that McCarthy's top aide, Roy Cohn, was homosexual, as he in fact was.)
So from being murdered to tortured, minds have changed, but you like every LGBT and straight male and female, we must work together to fight against the injustice brought upon our LGBT brother's and sisters. I know as a 16-year-old it's tough, but it's no tougher than speaking up against the government and their cover-up on and beyond 9/11. Find a Meetup group and mobilize. I did and I find it inspiring and comforting that there are people other than Asians that I have a great time with
